All information about cockroach

Generally reviled and persecuted, cockroaches make up a large group of insects whose evolution dates back more than 300 million years. There are some 4,600 species and more than 460 genera, but only about 30 live in habitats of humans and about 4 are considered pests: the American cockroach, the Australian cockroach, the German cockroach and the eastern cockroach. It is estimated that only 1 percent of all species is harmful to humans.

The word Blattodea comes from the Latin Blatta, which means “insect that flees from the light”.

Description about cockroaches

The cockroaches have a flattened, wide, oval body with a rubbery appearance, with a large flat plate attached to the thorax (3 segments) that covers part of the head, which is small and from it arise thin and flexible antennas. Your abdomen is divided into 10 segments. The whole body is protected by a hard exoskeleton coated with a waxy substance. They have large compound eyes and buccal parts adapted to bite, chew and suck liquid foods. They have several gustatory and tactile receivers.

The size is variable. Some are the size of a human nail, while the longest (Megaloblatta longipennis) reaches 97 millimeters in length and 20 centimeters in span. The heaviest species (Macropanesthia rhinoceros) reaches just over 30 grams. They present a multitude of colors, from light brown to black, and patterns of spots, stripes, and circles that make up designs that a cockroach is not likely to have.

Distribution and habitat about cockroaches

Cockroaches are distributed almost all over the world: Africa, Asia, Europe, America and Australia, as well as several islands and even the Arctic. They are very abundant in the tropical and subtropical regions and occupy a wide range of habitats according to the species. They are very strong and extremely resistant animals, so much that they can withstand temperatures of up to -122 ° C and high levels of radiation.

Most live in dark and humid places in forests, pastures, steppes, marshes, heathland, deserts and coastal communities, just to mention a few habitats. Of course, some species prefer to inhabit houses and buildings in populated areas and can be found in basements, closets, cupboards and other places close to water sources and food.

Information about Feeding cockroach

These omnivorous insects can eat almost anything they encounter, including inorganic materials. In their natural habitat they feed on fallen fruits, leaves and carrion, while in populated areas they consume what they find among garbage, kitchens and other places: bread, dead insects, fruits, leather, skin flakes, paper, starch , glue, hair, fermented products, soap, among other elements.

They can survive for long periods of time with scarce food resources. Paper and other cellulose composites are digested by some species thanks to the presence of bacteria and protozoa inside their intestines.

Information about Behavior cockroach

It is not a strange fact that cockroaches adapt excellently to the conditions of their environment. They are mostly nocturnal and, indeed, tend to flee in contact with light. They are also social animals by nature, so they tend to move together. Many species are gregarious and show organized behaviors for decision making.

Some cockroaches emit a whistling sound or a screeching noise. For example, the species Gromphadorphina portentosa expels air from its spiracles (respiratory structures) to “whistle”.

Information about Reproduction of roaches

Cockroaches produce eggs. Most females give off an aroma laden with sex pheromones with the aim of attracting males and obtaining a mate with which to mate. On the other hand, the males produce secretions that have the same function and to prepare the female for mating. The process of courtship may include body movements and sound emission. Once she accepts the male, they both copulate for a brief time during which the male transfers sperm to the female in a spermatophore. She can bury her eggs, protected in a capsule called ootheca, or carry them under her abdomen. In some species the eggs hatch inside the mother.

Information about threats and conservation of cockroaches

Cockroaches have a bad reputation in the world, although usually people refer to those considered pests. These species, usually found in houses, for their rapid reproduction and resistance to external agents, come to infest a site. They are associated with dirt and lack of sanitation. In fact, they can carry dangerous germs in the legs and expel viruses and protozoa through their feces, capable of infecting and causing diseases in humans. For all this, cockroaches are not welcome in buildings and various measures are applied to control their populations, from home remedies to the application of chemical substances.

Certain species that live in the wild are threatened by introduced predators in their habitat, the spread of harmful grasses, fires, loss of habitat and rise in sea level. Delosia ornata is “Critically Endangered” and Nocticola gerlachi is “Endangered”, according to the Red List of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
